Merrill Middle school presented Dr. Martin Luther King,Merrill Middle School will host its 5th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Celebration on Tuesday, January 22, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. in the middle school gymnasium. The celebration is to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as well as celebrate the cultural diversity of the Oshkosh community. The theme of this year’s assembly is, “From His Legacy to Mine.” The public is invited to attend.

The celebration will feature a variety of guest speakers, including six students from Merrill Middle School, and two former Merrill students now attending North High School. This year’s honorary community guest speaker will be Alison Starr, motivational speaker, trainer, coach, and owner of Tashi Deley, LLC. Tashi Deley is a local talent development consulting firm; its name is derived from a Tibetan greeting that means, “I see you and I honor the greatness within you.” The greeting is the foundation of Starr’s training sessions and one-on-one coaching.

Another feature of this year’s event will be a performance by the Limanya Drum and Dance Ensemble from Madison, Wisconsin. The Limanya Ensemble will perform traditional music and dance from Guinea and Mali, West Africa. The Ensemble will also perform for Merrill Elementary School students before the assembly. During the day, Merrill Middle School students will have the opportunity to meet the group’s directors, Mandjou Mara and Maya Kadakia, and participate in a variety of African traditions, celebrations, and cultural exploration.

After the celebration, a lunch reception will be held for all guest speakers (and their families), the Limanya performers, as well as District administration and board members in attendance. A special thank you to ArtsCore for sponsoring the Limanya Drum & Dance Ensemble.

This month, to recognize and celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, students throughout the Oshkosh Area School District (OASD) will be exposed to content and activities relating to the significance of the person and the day. OASD schools will be holding special activities, lessons, programs, and assemblies throughout the month to celebrate the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.
