Situation quickly resolved, no threat to students, school, or the public

Oshkosh North High School was placed on a precautionary lockdown on Thursday, November 1, 2018. The lockdown lasted approximately 50 minutes. At no time were students, staff, or the public in danger.

At approximately 9:20 a.m. today, the Oshkosh Police Department advised Oshkosh North High School of a situation involving an Oshkosh North student, and as a precautionary measure, the school was placed in a hard lockdown. The student was located off of school grounds by the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department and at approximately 10:15 a.m. the Oshkosh Police Department advised Oshkosh North that the situation was resolved and the hard lockdown was lifted. At no time did the student possess a firearm during this situation nor was any threat made to the school. No students or staff were in any danger at any time. However, school and District leaders, under the direction of the Oshkosh Police Department, activated the school’s emergency response plan as a precautionary measure.

"We are grateful for the collective effort and expertise of our school and District leaders, as well as local law enforcement agencies," said Dr. Vickie Cartwright, Superintendent of Schools for the Oshkosh Area School District. “Any threat, real or perceived, to our school system is taken very seriously and we will always implement precautionary measures to ensure student and staff safety. However, we realize that a lockdown can be a scary situation for students and parents and we do our best to communicate as timely as possible with available details and information provided by our law enforcement partners. We certainly appreciate the understanding and support of our school families and will continue to prioritize school safety at all times.”

Counseling services will be available to Oshkosh North students who are in need of additional support following today’s lockdown. In the Oshkosh Area School District, the safety and security of our children is the top priority and will continue to be. The District reminds all students of the importance of telling an adult if there is any concern or threat of any kind at school. Additionally, parents are encouraged to discuss the seriousness of school safety. In this way, the District, parents, students and entire families are all working together to keep schools safe.
