Second Annual MLK Day Celebration

The Oshkosh Area School District (OASD) invites you to be part of our Second Annual MLK Day Celebration on Monday, January 19, 2026.

Join your neighbors and our school community as we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy under the theme: “True peace is not merely the absence of tension; it is the presence of justice.”

Event Details

  • Date: Monday, January 19, 2026 (Non-school day / paid holiday in the OASD)
  • Location: Vel Phillips Middle School - Atrium
  • Time: 8 - 10:45 a.m.
    • 8 - 9 a.m.: Complimentary continental breakfast and community connection time
    • 9 a.m.: Program begins
  • Features: Complimentary breakfast, community connection time, keynote speaker, recognition of MLK essay contest winners, and student music performances.
  • Open to: All ages welcome (students/children must be accompanied by a guardian).
  • Cost & Registration: The event is free, but registration is required for planning purposes.
    • RSVP Extended Deadline: Wednesday, January 14, 2026 (pre-registration is not required but appreciated for event planning)

Building on Last Year's Success

The inaugural 2025 MLK Day Celebration brought together over 200 students, families, and community members for a morning of reflection, music, and connection.

Highlights included:

  • A welcoming continental breakfast with music by the Oshkosh North Jazz Band.
  • Inspirational musical performances from OASD student choirs.
  • Recognition of winners from the 23rd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest.
  • A powerful keynote address by Dr. Sam Coleman, OASD Assistant Superintendent of Instruction.
