What is best for me/my student? - Prekindergarten
The following section has information which may help your family determine which learning environment best fits your families needs. Due to their age, preK students must have an adult with them during school hours to support their learning. However, this adult can be an alternative caregiver and does not need to be the parent/legal guardian.
Knowing that, here are two important factors to consider when deciding which environment is best for your student.
- Live, synchronous instruction in the form of small groups and one-on-one learning sessions is a component of OOEL. Who is available to assist your child with joining these virtual meetings during normal school hours (7:30-3:15)?
- Is your child able to engage with lessons that are shared virtually through an iPad?
Whichever environment you choose, you are committing to staying with your choice for the remainder of the 2020-2021 year and your home school will likely move between models.

Daily Expectations
- Oshkosh eAcademy follows the OASD Academic School-Year Calendar.
- Online learning at the middle and high school levels is designed for those who desire more flexibility, more of a challenge, or who excel outside of a physical classroom.
- Students in grades 6-12 are expected to spend a minimum of 6 hours a day on school work. Similar to a traditional school schedule, students will be expected to work approximately one hour per course each day. This time estimate is a combination of reading online modules, taking notes, typing documents, joining discussion threads, and connecting with their instructor(s).
- Students will log into their scheduled number of classes daily and complete the assignments due that day. Students may work ahead of schedule with teacher permission. NOTE: OASD policy requires full-time students in grades 6-11 to have six courses. If on track to graduate, grade 12 students are allowed to have five courses.
- The majority of online instruction is delivered using a flexible asynchronous format. Teachers provide personalized instruction and 1:1 support in the online classroom using email, text, and zoom meetings. Teachers host open virtual office hours where students can get extra help and personal attention as/if needed.
- Students will be required to check in with their teacher during school hours.
- As a middle/high school parent you are an integral part of your child's education especially when choosing a fully virtual school option. Parents are expected to monitor their student’s progress and maintain communication with their student’s instructor or learning coach.
- Course content will be delivered through Buzz and Canvas learning management systems. Parents will be given access to track daily course progress and grades in both systems. Infinite Campus will still be used to view progress reports and final semester grades.
- School counselors will help schedule classes based on grade level requirements or graduation requirements. All efforts will be made to give students a similar schedule, based on availability of courses.
- Students will be expected to complete an online orientation prior to beginning a course.
- Online students may participate in extracurricular activities at their OASD home school.
Sample Daily Schedule
- 7:30 - 8 a.m. - Breakfast: Wake up, prepare work space/environment
- 8:30 - 11:30 a.m. - Log into morning classes (Hours 1-3): Students check for announcements from teachers, and begin working through the modules assigned for that day/week with the use of the pace guide and teachers’ directions

Student Services (also known as Pupil Services) supports the district’s instructional programs to help students attain their educational and career goals. Student Services staff work closely with students, staff and parents to identify individual needs and provide supports that are most appropriate to meet those needs. These include psychological, nursing, counseling, social work, and section 504 services. These services will be available through your student's home school. For questions about Student Services/Pupil Services, contact: Matthew Kaemmerer, Director of Pupil Services 920.424.0113
Social Emotional Learning (SEL)
OASD elementary teachers will be incorporating best SEL practices/lessons into their instruction. Social-emotional learning provides students with the necessary skills to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, and modify behavior. Additional OASD Pupil Service Staff will also assist elementary students as needed.
Curriculum
- eAcademy uses curriculum that is both interactive and rigorous while aligned to Common Core State Standards and designed for virtual instruction. This is different from the OASD’s adopted district core curriculums that are aligned to Common Core State Standards and designed for classroom instruction.
- The eAcademy curriculum will be delivered to the student at their current grade level (Math, English, Science, and Social Studies). For example, a student in 9th grade will receive 9th Grade English. To achieve success, students are expected to submit multiple assignments in each course weekly. Students can learn at their own pace; however, “any pace” still means that students must make progress in the course every week.
- To measure learning, students will independently complete self-checks, practice lessons, multiple choice questions, written assignments, projects, discussion-based assessments, quizzes, and final exams.

Curriculum
- Oshkosh Online Early Learning uses the Oshkosh Area School District’s curriculum in the areas of literacy, mathematics, and social-emotional learning in a modified format to meet the unique nuances of an online learning format. This curriculum aligns with the Wisconsin Model Early Learning standards and Teaching Strategies Gold assessment system. This is similar to the content being utilized for in-person instruction within OASD’s Oshkosh Early Learning classrooms and aligns to the scope and sequence of learning across the 4K-5th grade educational system.
- To achieve success, students are expected to complete provided activities with the supervision of an adult daily. It is recommended that children also attend the small group or individual learning sessions provided by the teacher. Students can learn at their own pace; however, “any pace” still means that students must make progress in the course every week.
- To measure learning teachers will make note of students skills during small group and individual virtual learning sessions. Teachers will also partner with families to collect evidence of student learning through picture and video artifacts submitted via Google Classroom.
Supplies
- Parents will be provided with a school supply list specific to Oshkosh Online Early Learning (see OOEL Materials Lists linked below).
- The OASD will provide printed materials and learning kits for literacy, math, and social-emotional lessons.
- A personal device may be provided based on availability for families who previously indicated they do not have access to a device in order to access online content.
