Course Registration Instructions
Students must attend every session of summer school when a class meets for credit from 8:00 AM until 12:30 PM. DPI (Department of Public Instruction) rules state that students must attend classes for so many hours in order to get credit. This is in addition to earning a passing grade for a class during summer school. If you have any plans or need to have your high school student miss summer school for any reason while it is in session, it may be best not to sign them up.

Exploring the Great Artdoors! | This course is designed as an introductory art course that will provide experiences in clay, digital photography, drawing and painting. We will be exploring a variety of natural plant and animal subjects found in the great outdoors. In three weeks we will become familiar with a variety of artists as well as explore wheel throwing, hand building, burnishing and raku firing, fast and slow shutter speed and digital macro photography, contour drawing, ink and gesture drawing. Transition In partnership with Boys & Girls Club of Oshkosh (BGCO) | Transitioning from Middle School to High School is an important time in a teens life. From learning the layout of a new school to maneuvering friendships to learning to manage time and activities, teens have to learn so much in that first week of high school. In collaboration with OASD, the Boys & Girls Club of Oshkosh will offer a 6 week course (Monday - Friday) in partnerships with the Club on transitioning from Middle School to High School. Areas to cover would be Study Skills, Note Taking, Time Management, Stress Management, Friendships and Relationships, Conflict Resolution, School and Community Activities, Career Planning, Jobs, and much more. Guest Speakers, tours of schools, and team/relationship building will also be included. Prerequisite: None Grade: 9 |
PSYCHOLOGY | Psychology introduces students to the systematic and scientific study of the behavior and mental processes of human beings and animals. The other component of this course is current world, national, and local events. Prerequisite: None Grade: 11, 12 |
POWER MECHANICS | Power Mechanics is designed for students who want to learn the fundamentals of a small internal combustion engine. The theory and construction of two- and four-cycle engines through the process of disassembling and reassembling engines are major focuses of study. Prerequisite: None Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12 |
HORTICULTURE |
Horticulture explores soils, basic plant growth and processes, reproduction, and genetics. Students grow seeds, take cuttings, water; use plant culture, fertilizers and chemicals, and work in the greenhouse. Landscaping topics will be covered related to plant selection, and lawn care. Class projects may include terrariums, holiday decorations and plants, and seasonal floral designs. Only Available in the First session

Culinary Arts 1 focuses on the importance of food choices. Students explore healthy lifestyle and consumer choices while learning food preparation skills in a cooking laboratory.

PERSONAL FINANCIAL PLANNING |
Personal Financial Planning prepares students for their financial future. Topics included: saving, budgeting, spending plans, investing, stock market game, keeping a checkbook, using credit cards wisely, and understanding insurance. Fulfills Financial Literacy graduation requirement.

CREATIVE WRITING 2 |
Creative Writing 2: For many hundreds of years, literature has been one of the most importanthuman art forms. It allows us to give voice to our emotions, create imaginary worlds, express ideas, and escape the confines of material reality. Through creative writing, we can come to understand ourselves and our world a little bit better. This course allows students to examine closely the structures and methods published authors use to produce successful and engaging fiction, poetry and prose.

US HISTORY |
U. S. History In this eAcademy course, the emphasis is on the present as it was shaped by the past. It focuses on how change took place socially, economically, politically and how democratic traditions impacted these changes.

FORENSIC SCIENCE |
Forensic Science Fingerprints. Blood spatter. DNA analysis. The world of law enforcement is increasingly making use of the techniques and knowledge from the sciences to better understand the crimes that are committed and to catch those individuals responsible for the crimes. Forensic science applies scientific knowledge to the criminal justice system. This course focuses on some of the techniques and practices used by forensic scientists during a crime scene investigation (CSI). Starting with how clues and data are recorded and preserved, the student will follow evidence trails until the CSI goes to trial, examining how various elements of the crime scene are analyzed and processed.

Marine Science: As our amazing planet continues to change over time, it becomes increasingly apparent how human activity has made environmental impacts. In the marine science course, students will delve deep into Earth's bodies of water and study geologic structures and how they impact the oceans. Students will investigate characteristics of various populations, patterns of distribution of life in our aquatic systems, and ongoing changes occurring every day in our precious ecosystems. Students will be amazed and enlightened at just how much our oceans and lakes affect climate, weather, and seasonal variations. They will have the opportunity to explore the relationships among living organisms and see how they are affected by our oceans currents, tides, and waves. Hold on, it is one amazing journey.

CREATIVE WRITING 1 | Creative Writing is designed for students who want to create original, imaginative texts in a variety of forms such as: essays, poems and short stories. Prerequisite: None Grade: 10, 11, 12 |
CREATIVE WRITING 2 | For many hundreds of years, literature has been one of the most important human art forms. It allows us to give voice to our emotions, create imaginary worlds, express ideas, and escape the confines of material reality. Through creative writing, we can come to understand ourselves and our world a little bit better. This course provides students with a solid grounding in the writing process, from finding inspiration to building a basic story to using complicated literary techniques and creating strange hybrid forms of poetic prose and prose poetry. By the end of this course, students will learn how to discover their creative thoughts and turn those ideas into fully realized pieces of creative writing. PERSONAL & FAMILY FINANCE | Personal and Family Finance In this eAcademy course, students learn to make smart decisions with their money in areas of saving, spending and investing. SOCIOLOGY | Sociology In this eAcademy course, students recognize how group behavior impacts both the individual and society. By studying groups in society such as families, organizations, governments and schools, students examine how society changes over time. Prerequisite: None Grade: 11, 12 |
ADVANCED PE (Previously Personal Fitness) | Personal PE -Advanced PE (Previously Personal Fitness): This two-semester course guides students through an in-depth examination of the effects of exercise on the body. Students learn how to exercise efficiently and properly. Basic anatomy, bio-mechanics, and physiology will serve as a foundation for students to build effective exercise programs. The study of nutrition and human behavior is also an integral part of the course. Students conduct fitness assessments and participate in weekly physical activity. CRIMINOLOGY | Criminology In today's society, crime and deviant behavior are often one of the top concerns of society members. From the nightly news to personal experiences with victimization, crime seems to be all around us. In this course, we will explore the field of criminology or the study of crime. In doing so, we will look at possible explanations for crime from psychological, biological, and sociological standpoints, explore the various types of crime and their consequences for society, and investigate how crime and criminals are handled by the criminal justice system. Why do some individuals commit crimes but others don't? What aspects in our culture and society promote crime and deviance? Why do individuals receive different punishments for the same crime? What factors shape the criminal case process, from arrest to punishments? Prerequisite: None Grade: 10, 11, 12 |
GOTHIC LITERATURE | Gothic Literature: From vampires to ghosts, these frightening stories have influenced fiction writers since the 18th century. This course will focus on the major themes found in Gothic literature and demonstrate how the core writing drivers produce, for the reader, a thrilling psychological environment. Terror versus horror, the influence of the supernatural, and descriptions of the difference between good and evil are just a few of the themes presented. By the time students have completed this course, they will have gained an understanding of and an appreciation for the complex nature of dark fiction. Prerequisite: None Grade: 12 |

WEST CATS HS |
The High School C.A.T.S. - Course is for any student living in the Oshkosh School District and entering into 9th – 12th grade for the 2024-2025 school year. Middle and High School C.A.T.S. will teach safe training techniques students can utilize to become more fit and improve their physical abilities in strength, agility, and speed. The class will meet five days per week (Mon-Fri) for 90 minutes.

SPARTAN STRENGTH |
The High School Spartan Strength - SESSION 1 course is for any student living in the Oshkosh School District and entering into 9th-12th grade for the 2024-2025 school year. This is a strength and conditioning course that has been designed for high school students by Certified Strength and Conditioning teachers/coaches. The class will put emphasis on proper weightlifting techniques, safety when it comes to working out with exercise equipment, healthy lifestyle choices, and speed and agility drills. Students completing this course will be in excellent shape/condition and will maximize their physical potential. The class will meet four days per week (Mon-Thur.) for 120 minutes.

ADAPTED SPORT LEAGUE |
The Adapted Sports League Summer Camp will develop physical fitness skills throughout 3 different sports such as indoor soccer, indoor floor hockey, and indoor wiffle ball. It is a requirement that the student has a disability recognized by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) to participate within the camp; students grades 9-12 who are unable to successfully compete with their non-disabled peers. There will be two certified adapted physical education teachers and two support staff members to ensure the student will remain in a safe and successful environment. Prior to working with athletes, all staff members will be CPR, AED, and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) certified per district requirements. This camp is a lead up to our Adapted Sports League that will take place in the Fall as a school-sponsored extracurricular sports program and athletes will need to complete all three seasons to receive a varsity letter, per league requirements. Each sport will be roughly 6 weeks in Fall - soccer, Winter - floor hockey, and Spring - wiffle ball.

Jazz Ensemble students study and perform music of the jazz idiom, including improvisation, jazz rock, blues, swing, Latin, etc. This course will serve as an introduction to the rich history of jazz music. Through ensemble rehearsal, individual practice, small group sectionals, and performance opportunities, the students will gain an understanding and appreciation for this great art form. For students who ride the bus (current grades 4K-8):
- Students will arrive at the summer school site in time for free breakfast at Jefferson, Oaklawn, and Vel Phillips. Breakfast is not served at Traeger Elem.
- Buses will load after the lunch period. Students may choose to eat school lunch, bring their own lunch, or sit quietly until the buses arrive.
- Bus pickup/drop-off times will be sent along with course information

The students will learn about the language, customs, and how to prepare and eat foods from these four countries. In addition to cooking, students will also play games and learn how to count in each of the languages. |
GET OUT AND PLAY 3-5 | For students currently in grades 3 - 5. Get out and play offers children opportunities to learn games and activities to be used at home, around the neighborhood, or at the park. Some of the activities include: bocce ball, kan jam, ultimate frisbee, four square, lightning, rollerskating, pogo sticking, 4 wall soccer, spud, pickle and various outdoor hide and seek games. |
GYMNASTICS, TUMBLING 3-5 | For students currently in grades 3 - 5. This class will focus on 2 areas each day. The first half of class will consist of basic gymnastics and tumbling and the second half of the class will consist of organized ball games. Students will learn common gymnastics positions, and will construct their own routines consisting of different types of rolls, cartwheels, round offs, tripods and headstands. Equipment including balance beams, vaulting and mounting box and ropes will be incorporated into daily activities. The games part of the day will consist of individual and team games such as: kickball, scatter dodge ball, trench ball, bean bag toss, team dodge ball, queen ball and more. |

MS DESIGN AND BUILD 6-8 | For students currently in grades 6 - 8. Students will be introduced to various technology skills such as drafting, 3d printing, woodworking, graphic arts, metalworking, electricity, and auto repair through hands-on projects. Students will learn the safe use of various tools through the following activities: Design an object in the computer lab and then bring it to life with the 3D printer and laser engraver; Learn about Graphic Arts, design a sticker and use the vinyl cutter; Create a project using woodworking and/or metalworking tools; Learn and program the CNC (computer controlled) mill; Create electrical circuits; Learn about parts of an automobile. |

MS Intro. to American Sign Language 6-8 |
For students currently in grades 6 - 8. This class will inform students of what it means to be deaf, learn more about the Deaf Culture, how a hearing loss can affect communication, learn hand-shape, proper etiquette, and spatial relations used for signing, basic signs (ABC, Numbers, Colors, days of the week, School Words, Family, Food, Animals and more!), and learn basic commands/phrases in Sign. Students will also have fun learning how to sign songs and play with the language through all hands on activities. |

For students currently in grades 6 - 8. Students will build their social and life skills such as taking turns, winning, losing, playing fairly, sportsmanship, persevering, and learning more while playing a variety of card and board games in addition to other indoor and outdoor interactive games. Literacy skills will be enhanced through reading and understanding game rules and communicating with fellow game players in an appropriate manner.

The best of both worlds - Dogs and Art! We will collage, paint, illustrate and sculpt as we learn about our canine friends. Did you know that dogs are seen throughout art history in many famous paintings and works of art? We will learn about various dog breeds and what they enjoy doing as well as jobs they perform in our community and how to care for them. We will have a variety of live dogs and their experienced handlers visit our class teaching us about the expansive world of dogs.

This is a basic weight lifting/strength training course that has been designed strictly for middle school students. This class will put emphasis on proper weightlifting techniques, safety when it comes to working out with exercise equipment, healthy lifestyle choices, speed and agility drills. For students currently in grades K to 5 Limited registration for students in grades 6 to 8 as Leadership Interns in Training (LITs register online and pay the $45 supply fee) This camp runs the week before the summer school session starts. Students are able to attend this camp as well as one or two four week summer school courses and any other music or athletic camps for their age group. Location: Lakeside Elementary Dates: June 4-7 Time: 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Tuesday - Friday. No camp on MONDAY! Cost: $45 to cover supplies Registration is not completed through Infinite Campus.
