Carl Traeger Elementary Addition Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

On Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at 4:15 PM, the Oshkosh Area School District (OASD) hosted an official ribbon-cutting ceremony at Carl Traeger Elementary School. District leaders, school staff, students, families, community members, and media gathered to celebrate the grand opening of the school’s new building addition and fully inclusive playground - both funded through community support of the 2025 capital referendum as part of Phase 2 of the District’s long-range facilities plan.

Key Highlights & Facilities Updates

Building Addition: Expanded school capacity to serve up to 600 K–5 students, adding four dedicated kindergarten classrooms.
Current & Future Use: For the 2026–2027 school year, the new wing is temporarily housing OASD 4K classes before transitioning to serve Carl Traeger kindergarteners starting in the 2027–2028 school year.
Inclusive Playground: Features a fully accessible design engineered to allow children of all physical abilities to play, interact, and build community side by side.

June 16 Focused Property Owner Session

Purpose: Targeted Discussion About Academic Wing

District representatives and Bray Architects hosted an intentional, early-stage working session on June 16, 2026 at Shapiro STEM Academy. Invitation letters were hand-delivered specifically to residents whose properties are located directly across from the planned academic wing. Knowing that these homes are among those most directly impacted by the building’s footprint, this extra outreach step was created to meet in a smaller group setting to share preliminary design plans, talk about the project, and answer technical questions before a larger neighborhood meeting.

August 18 Neighborhood Meeting

Purpose: Neighborhood Discussion About Project Overview

School families, neighbors, and community members gathered at the Oshkosh West High School Alberta Kimball Auditorium on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, for a project overview of the district's new consolidated westside middle school.

District representatives were joined by architects from Bray Architects and a representative from the City of Oshkosh Planning Services to share updated design plans and project timelines. Attendees had the opportunity to learn about the latest developments, ask questions, and share direct feedback on the upcoming facility.

On December 2, 2025 the OASD hosted a neighborhood meeting to discuss the detailed project plans for the Oakwood Elementary expansion project. To ensure all stakeholders are informed, a letter was mailed to neighbors directly surrounding the school, and school families will be invited via email.

Who: District representatives, architects from Bray Architects, and a representative from the City of Oshkosh Planning Services.

This meeting was an opportunity to learn more, ask questions, and provide feedback on the project.

Carl Traeger Neighborhood Meeting: August 19

Purpose: Project Overview

On August 19, 2025 the OASD hosted a neighborhood meeting to discuss the detailed project plans for the Carl Traeger Elementary four-classroom addition. To ensure all stakeholders are informed, a letter was mailed to neighbors directly surrounding the school, and school families were invited via email. The meeting covered final plans for the addition, playground planning, and changes to site traffic flow.

When: Tuesday, August 19, at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Carl Traeger Middle School - Cafetorium
Who: District representatives, architects from Bray Architects, and experts from TADI and the City of Oshkosh Planning Services.

This meeting was an opportunity to learn more, ask questions, and provide feedback on the project.

Shapiro Building Decommissioning & Resources

The Oshkosh Area School District (OASD) acknowledges that closing and demolishing a school building is a significant project, and aims to create a shared understanding of the process with the community. The information below applies to the Shapiro STEM Academy school building (closed in June 2026).

NOTE: The Shapiro building will be torn down in December 2026 to allow construction to begin on the new westside middle school, which will open in the fall of 2028.

First and foremost, the OASD understands the importance of honoring the history of the Shapiro school, as well as repurposing items when appropriate. Following the closure of Shapiro STEM Academy at the end of the 2025-2026 school year, the Oshkosh Area School District engaged in a decommissioning process that was focused on practical redistribution of assets to support our remaining schools, partner with local non-profits, and responsibly clear the facility.

Academic and Curricular Materials: Current instructional and curriculum resources moved directly alongside relocating students and staff, or were moved within the district as needed.
Library Collections: The library media team first identified specific titles to fill existing gaps at other district schools. At the end of the 2025–2026 school year, OASD teachers were invited to select books to enrich their classroom libraries. Remaining titles were offered directly to local community partners, and all final leftover materials were donated to the "Read More" initiative, which distributes free books directly to local families.
Historical and Student Items: Historical artifacts and student-created work were handled with care. Identified items were returned directly to their creators or owners when possible during the school closing process; while remaining preserved items were placed into district storage for future display or return.
Furniture and Equipment: School principals across the district were invited to review materials and request specific items needed for their buildings. Items in good working order meeting current district standards were transferred directly to those sites. Remaining material was offered to local non-profits, including the Oshkosh Children's Museum and the Fox Valley Community Learning Center (FVCLC).

Disposal was reserved for items that were broken, obsolete, non-standard, or structurally compromised. Offering degraded equipment to the public introduces safety risks, legal liability, and labor costs.

To manage waste responsibly, remaining items were separated into recycling and garbage containers. Materials broken down on-site were dismantled solely to compact bulky items and maximize container volume. The district’s focus during building transitions is to ensure usable items remain in our district or community while managing taxpayer dollars as efficiently as possible.

Our Approach to Westside Boundary Changes

Following our community's approval of our April 2025 referendum, the Oshkosh Area School District is actively engaging in facility updates and school consolidation. This work necessitates the careful redrawing of attendance boundaries. Our approach is transparent, data-driven, and aims to optimize student access to quality education and efficient use of our updated facilities. This multi-year plan, extending through Fall 2029, outlines key milestones for elementary and middle school zone changes, including the closure of Shapiro STEM Academy in June 2026, Roosevelt Elementary in June 2027, and South Park and Perry Tipler Middle Schools in June 2028, culminating in the opening of a new Westside Middle School in Fall 2028 and a dedicated Pre-kindergarten Center in Fall 2029.
